Electrical Services and Electrical Repair in Maidstone

All electrical work for homes, businesses and industrial sites in Maidstone and throughout Kent, carried out by the local electricians at Heads Up Electrical Ltd.

Domestic electricians

Electrical work for homeowners, landlords and tenants.

Most of our domestic work is in and around Maidstone: older houses that need rewiring or a new consumer unit, kitchens and extensions that need new circuits, and everyday jobs such as extra sockets and new light fittings. We do small jobs as readily as big ones.

  • Full and partial house rewires
  • Consumer unit (fuse board) replacements
  • Extra sockets, switches and fittings
  • New circuits for cookers, showers and extensions
  • Indoor lighting: downlights, pendants, LED upgrades
  • Outdoor, garden and security lighting
  • Power to garages, sheds and garden rooms
  • Electric vehicle charge points
  • Electric underfloor heating
  • Door entry and access control

If you are not sure what you need, describe the problem and we will tell you what is involved. Homes in the older parts of Maidstone and the surrounding villages often still have rewireable fuses or rubber-insulated cable, and an inspection is the quickest way to find out where you stand.

Commercial electricians

Shops, offices, pubs, restaurants and rented property.

A business needs its electrics to be safe, compliant and reliable, and it needs the work done without losing trade. As a commercial electrical contractor we plan jobs around your opening hours and keep you informed while we are on site.

  • Power and lighting for fit-outs and refurbishments
  • Distribution board installation and upgrades
  • LED lighting upgrades
  • Additional sockets, circuits and data points
  • External, car park and security lighting
  • Door entry and access control
  • Periodic inspection and testing (EICR)
  • Repairs and remedial work after an inspection

Landlords and managing agents use us for inspection reports between tenancies and for the repairs that follow, so one electrical company handles both.

Industrial electricians

Workshops, units, warehouses and factories.

Industrial electrical work is heavier and less forgiving than domestic wiring: three-phase supplies, larger cables and equipment that has to keep running. Our electricians install, alter and repair industrial systems across Maidstone and Kent.

  • Three-phase supplies and distribution
  • Isolators and supplies to machinery
  • Steel wire armoured (SWA) cabling
  • Cable tray, ladder, trunking and conduit
  • Fault finding and repairs on plant supplies
  • Planned inspection and testing

Electrical repair

Electrical repair and fault finding

When something stops working, or starts tripping, the repair is usually simple once the cause is known. Finding the cause is the skilled part. Our electricians work through the circuit methodically instead of swapping parts and hoping.

Faults we are called to most

  • An RCD or breaker that trips at random
  • Sockets or lights that have stopped working
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Burnt, cracked or warm sockets and switches
  • Outdoor lights and sockets tripping in wet weather
  • Damage after a leak, a nail or a screw through a cable

How our electricians trace a fault

We start with what you have noticed and when it happens. Then we isolate the circuit and test it: insulation resistance to find damaged cable or damp, continuity to find broken or loose connections, and RCD tests to check the device itself. Once we know the cause we show you, explain the repair and put it right.

Testing and inspection

Electrical testing and inspection (EICR)

An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a full check of the fixed wiring in a building: the consumer unit or distribution boards, the cables, sockets, switches and light fittings. Each circuit is inspected and tested, and anything unsafe is coded by how urgent it is.

How often an inspection is usually recommended
A home you ownEvery 10 years, or when you move
A rented homeEvery 5 years, or at a change of tenancy
Shops and officesEvery 5 years
Industrial premisesEvery 3 years

If the report finds problems, we explain them in plain English and quote for the repairs separately, so you can decide what to do.

How it works

From first call to finished job

  1. Tell us about the job

Call 07840 188694 or send the Request a Callback form. A photo of the fuse board or the problem always helps.

  2. We look and quote

We talk the job through, visit if it needs a look, and give you a price for the work.

  3. The work is done properly

Tidy cable runs and labelled circuits. We plan the work around your household or your trading hours.

  4. Tested and signed off

Every new or altered circuit is tested before it is handed back to you, with the certificate that applies to the job.

FAQs

Electrical services questions

What is the difference between a fuse box and a consumer unit?

They do the same job: both split the incoming supply into circuits and protect each one. An old fuse box uses fuse wire or cartridge fuses. A modern consumer unit uses circuit breakers and RCDs, which cut the power in a fraction of a second if someone touches a live part or a fault develops. Replacing an old board is one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades in an older home.

How long does a house rewire take?

It depends on the size of the house and whether you are living in it. A rewire is done in two stages, called first fix (cables and back boxes, before plastering) and second fix (sockets, switches, light fittings and the consumer unit). Tell us about the property and we will talk you through how long yours is likely to take and how we plan the work around you.

Do I need an EICR to rent out a property?

Yes. In England, private landlords must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every 5 years by a qualified person, give a copy of the report to the tenant, and put right anything the report marks as dangerous or potentially dangerous. We carry out the inspection and can do the remedial work if any is needed.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

New electrical work should be tested and certified to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. Depending on the job that is an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Some work in a home, such as a new circuit or a replacement consumer unit, also has to be notified to building control under Part P of the Building Regulations. Ask us what applies to your job when we quote.

Can you work around our opening hours?

We are open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 9pm, which gives shops, offices and workshops room to plan electrical work outside their busiest times. Tell us when your premises are quietest and we will plan the job with you.

What should I do if I smell burning from a socket?

Stop using it. If it is safe to reach your consumer unit, switch off that circuit or the main switch, and do not turn it back on. If you can see smoke or flames, get out and call 999. Then call an electrician: a burning smell usually means a loose connection or an overloaded accessory that is overheating, and it needs repairing before the circuit is used again.
